About the Conference

Note: All attendees of the conference must verify their vaccination status, or provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, dated within 72 hours of arrival of the conference. Attendees will receive instructions for submitting vaccine or testing documentation. Masks or face coverings may be required while attending all conference events, except while eating and drinking.


Conference Locations

The 2022 GLPA conference will be hosted by Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium in Williamsville, New York, and the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium in Buffalo, New York. A portion of the conference will also be held at the Embassy Suites hotel in Buffalo, New York

Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium (exterior) Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium (interior) The Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium has a 75 seat theater with a 30-foot dome (flat), and is equipped with a Spitz A5 optomechanical projector, Sky-Skan Definiti, and an RGB SkyLase system. The planetarium is located at Williamsville North High School, which will be the site of sponsor demonstrations and the business meeting.

Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium (exterior) Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium (interior) The Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium has a 48 seat theater with a 35-foot dome (flat), and is equipped with a Zeiss ZKP4 optomechanical projector, a Spitz SciDome 4k system, an AVI SkyLase laser system, and ChromaCove lighting. The planetarium is located at SUNY Buffalo State College, which will be the site of the welcoming reception, sponsor hall, paper sessions, and fulldome screenings.

Embassy Suites in Buffalo (exterior) Located in the heart of Buffalo, the Embassy Suites will host many conference activities as well as serve as the conference hotel. It will be the site of the Astronomy Update, state meetings, paper sessions, invited speakers, banquet, workshops, and the closing ceremonies.

What to wear

The standard dressy attire for the banquet is requested. For all other activities, wear what you are comfortable in.

Important / New Information

  • The conference hotel is a 10 minute drive from Buffalo State College, and a 30 minute drive from Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium.
  • The conference spans five days instead of four.
  • GLPA is offering a child/dependent care grant, in addition to a conference scholarship.
  • The pre-conference, day-long GLIPSA workshop will be offered again this year at the SUNY Buffalo State College.
  • Late registration (Sept. 4 - Oct. 4) fees are $50. There is no "last minute" registration this year.
  • There will be no on-site registration.
  • An optional electronic version of the conference notebook will be available.
  • Explore Buffalo’s rich architecture on a bus tour as part of Wednesday afternoon’s activities
  • On Wednesday after dinner, a cocktail reception will take place in the Sponsor Hall
  • Fun and Games during “SAMC After Dark” at Buffalo State College on Thursday evening followed by free time to explore Buffalo’s entertainment district around the hotel.
  • Optional post-conference field trip to Niagara Falls and the Buffalo Museum of Science to visit their astronomy floor and the rooftop Kellogg Observatory.
