Planetarium LED Dome Specialist

Position Summary:

The Fleischmann Planetarium within the University of Nevada, Reno College of Science invites applications for two Planetarium LED Dome Specialist positions. These positions provide specialized technical leadership for the George W. Gillemot Foundation LED Dome System, a complex integrated COSM CX system that powers more than 3,700 LED panels within the planetarium’s immersive dome environment. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Science, the specialists will support and maintain complex server architecture, visualization software, and technical operations to ensure seamless audio-visual performance.

The Planetarium LED Dome Specialists troubleshoot and maintain computerized, electrical, mechanical, and optical systems that support a wide range of programming, including K–12 education, university instruction, research visualization, and public events. The role requires strong independent problem-solving, coordination with technical staff and campus partners, and flexibility to support events outside standard business hours. Serving as a technical liaison across university units, these specialists apply adaptive troubleshooting and operational expertise to support the planetarium’s mission as a cornerstone of UNR’s museum and informal learning ecosystem. The position enables dynamic presentations that integrate scientific research, artistic expression, and cultural education in a state-of-the-art immersive environment.

Astronomy Instructor, Full-time Track

Position Summary: Bakersfield College is seeking a faculty member for Astronomy.  If you are highly motivated, eager to engage a diverse student body, and passionate about teaching and learning, we highly encourage you to submit an application.

The astronomy program at Bakersfield College has a 72-seat planetarium with a 36-foot dome, several small portable telescopes (including a Coronado H-alpha), and a great relationship with the community astronomy club to teach astronomy at all age levels and backgrounds. The planetarium has a Goto Chronos optical-mechanical projector and a Spitz SciDome 4K all-dome video projection system, all controlled by a Spitz ATM4 system. There is also a regular data projector to project rectangular lecture slides onto the dome.

Tenure-track faculty hired for this position will be expected to provide a quality astronomy learning experience appropriate for community college students of diverse educational backgrounds. Teaching assignments support the general education college astronomy classes (primarily for non-STEM majors). Other duties will include serving as the director of the planetarium involving coordinating maintenance, scheduling and running community events, and maintaining the planetarium’s website. The planetarium is used for the college’s astronomy classes, K12 school field trips, and evening shows for the public. This assignment may include teaching courses at various locations and different times including evenings and Friday/Saturday classes. Teaching modalities include in-person, hybrid, and online. Full-time faculty are expected to be present and engaged with their peers, regardless of instructional location or modality. Other than the main Panorama Campus, college courses may be scheduled in the greater Bakersfield area, rural communities, correctional facilities and high schools.

Other duties include: participation in student recruitment and articulation, transfer programs; maintaining subject matter currency; developing and revising curriculum; using computers and technology; assessment of learning outcomes; collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities.

Planetarium Manager

Position Summary: Planetarium Manager is the “face” of the institution and the primary marketer for all the planetarium services provided to the greater Jackson, MS community. This person is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the McNair – Davis Planetarium. This includes overseeing all aspects of the planetarium and exhibits, developing and implementing innovative educational programs, managing staff and volunteers, ensuring the financial sustainability of the programs, and fostering partnerships and relationships with area museums, convention center, area schools and colleges, and astronomical and planetarium communities. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of astronomy, planetarium operating systems, projection systems, coupled with a passion for science education and a proven ability to lead and inspire.

Program Assistant – Part Time

Position Summary: The Planetarium Producer / Programmer is primarily responsible for the production of all types of audio-visual content for the Cernan Earth and Space Center utilizing audio and video production techniques and programming of planetarium systems. Production and programming projects will be used in programs (including for sale or lease to other venues), exhibits, publications, websites, and other distribution methods. This position also assists with general monitoring of planetarium equipment and troubleshooting.
