Planetarium Supervisor

Position Summary: Do you have a talent for inspiring curiosity in others? Help to shape out of this world experiences for visitors of all ages as the Planetarium Supervisor at our Cape Fear Museum. This role will manage the daily operations, programming, and maintenance of our new planetarium. Our new digital dome theater will seat up to 60 guests and offers programming tailored to school groups, families, and young adults. The Planetarium Supervisor will curate and present astronomy-focused content, ensure equipment is functioning properly, and work closely with the education manager and staff to deliver engaging experiences for both school groups and the public.

Program Assistant – Part Time

Position Summary: The Planetarium Producer / Programmer is primarily responsible for the production of all types of audio-visual content for the Cernan Earth and Space Center utilizing audio and video production techniques and programming of planetarium systems. Production and programming projects will be used in programs (including for sale or lease to other venues), exhibits, publications, websites, and other distribution methods. This position also assists with general monitoring of planetarium equipment and troubleshooting.

Planetarium Technician

Position Summary:The Shiras Planetarium in Marquette, Michigan completed a $1,040,000 renovation in fall of 2025 and it is time to expand our staffing!  We are home to an amazing ZEISS VELVET Duo system, and also have an extensive KVANT laser system.  We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team!

Marquette Area Public Schools is accepting applications for a Shiras Planetarium Technician to support technical operations, programming, and public events at the Shiras Planetarium in Marquette, Michigan.

This is a part-time, non-union position (up to 20 hours per week) with an anticipated start date of February 2026. The position reports to the Planetarium Director and focuses on operating and maintaining projection, audio, lighting, and software systems; supporting shows and field trips; and assisting with content preparation.

Astronomy Instructor, Full-time Track

William M Thomas Planetarium – Bakersfield College

Base Salary: Full-time, $89,080.98 – $116,884.82/year

Position Summary: Bakersfield College is seeking a faculty member for Astronomy.  If you are highly motivated, eager to engage a diverse student body, and passionate about teaching and learning, we highly encourage you to submit an application.

The astronomy program at Bakersfield College has a 72-seat planetarium with a 36-foot dome, several small portable telescopes (including a Coronado H-alpha), and a great relationship with the community astronomy club to teach astronomy at all age levels and backgrounds. The planetarium has a Goto Chronos optical-mechanical projector and a Spitz SciDome 4K all-dome video projection system, all controlled by a Spitz ATM4 system. There is also a regular data projector to project rectangular lecture slides onto the dome.

Tenure-track faculty hired for this position will be expected to provide a quality astronomy learning experience appropriate for community college students of diverse educational backgrounds. Teaching assignments support the general education college astronomy classes (primarily for non-STEM majors). Other duties will include serving as the director of the planetarium involving coordinating maintenance, scheduling and running community events, and maintaining the planetarium’s website. The planetarium is used for the college’s astronomy classes, K12 school field trips, and evening shows for the public. This assignment may include teaching courses at various locations and different times including evenings and Friday/Saturday classes. Teaching modalities include in-person, hybrid, and online. Full-time faculty are expected to be present and engaged with their peers, regardless of instructional location or modality. Other than the main Panorama Campus, college courses may be scheduled in the greater Bakersfield area, rural communities, correctional facilities and high schools.

Other duties include: participation in student recruitment and articulation, transfer programs; maintaining subject matter currency; developing and revising curriculum; using computers and technology; assessment of learning outcomes; collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities.
